Wesley's Chapel
Travelling Trunk
Large wooden trunk with a number of drawers and three rope handles

This eighteenth century travelling trunk is here as a symbol of the itinerate preacher. John Wesley set an example to his preachers by regularly travelling around the country; it is said that he travelled 250,000 miles by horseback during his lifetime. He expected his preachers to travel regularly, spreading the word of God where it was most needed.
