Wesley's Chapel
The Wesley Chapel

Object image

Several people in this picture can be identified: Philip Embury, Barbara Heck and her husband, also Captain Thomas Webb of the King's Service, who later returned to England to ask for help in establishing Methodism in New York.

In the doorway of the church stands a black man who was once a slave owned by the church. His owners were leaving and rather than having him put up for sale, the church bought him and he became a Free man. He was to become one of the founders of the black American churches – the American Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
